What is a Learn Cycle?

A learn cycle is an automatic cycle for calibrating the smart battery gas gauge. The learn cycle consists of these phases:

• Controlled battery discharge
• Rest period
• Charge

The batteries are discharged to a predetermined threshold. During this phase, the battery gas gauge is calibrated.

The learn cycle requires these parameters:

• Fully charged batteries
• No overheated batteries

Additional Parameters

Learn cycles for duplex RAID controller module systems occur simultaneously. For RAID controller modules having backup power from more than one battery or set of battery cells, learn cycles occur sequentially.

Learn Cycle Scheduling

Important: It may take several hours for a learn cycle to complete. Write caching on all virtual disks will be disabled during this time.

Learn cycles are scheduled to start automatically at the same time of day and on the same day of the week. The interval between cycles is described in weeks. You can adjust the interval. Use these guidelines:

• Time is indicated in seconds elapsed since midnight GMT, January 1, 1970.
• You can set the learn cycle start time no more than seven days later than the currently scheduled time.
• You can set the learn cycle earlier than the currently scheduled time.

• The smart battery backup unit (BBU) consists of these components:
• Battery pack
• Charger
• Battery gas gauge
• Test load
• Control logic
