Monitoring Managed Storage Array Status

When the is opened, the storage management software establishes communication with each and determines the current .

The status icons displayed in the Enterprise Management Window represent a summary status for each storage array. If a storage array has a or status, you must select the storage array and launch its management window to determine the condition that is causing this status. More detailed status icons are shown in the Management Window for the various components that comprise the storage array. Also, the Recovery Guru option provides a detailed explanation of the conditions and the appropriate steps to remedy any Needs Attention status.

While storage arrays are being contacted, the following conditions occur:

After all of the storage arrays have been contacted, the following conditions occur:

Important: The storage management software checks every network link to each managed storage array every five minutes for an Unresponsive status change. If a network link goes down or comes back up right after it is checked, it could be up to five minutes before the corresponding status icon is updated to reflect a change to or from Unresponsive. All other status change events are updated more quickly.

Status Icons in the Tree View

The Tree view displays seven possible types of storage array status icons.

Status

Icon

Indicates...

Every component in the managed storage array is in the desired working condition.

There is a problem with the managed storage array that requires your intervention to correct it.

A Needs Attention condition has been corrected and the managed storage array is currently transitioning to an Optimal state.

The cannot communicate with the storage array or one RAID controller module or both RAID controller modules in the storage array.

You have started the Enterprise Management Window and the storage management software is establishing contact with the storage array.

(Firmware)
The storage array is running a level of firmware that is no longer supported by the storage management software.
Needs Upgrade Status (Software)
The storage management software you are attempting to use is incompatible with the firmware on the RAID controller modules in the storage array.

Supplemental Icons in the Tree View

There are two supplemental icons that display in the Tree view and show additional information about the storage array.

Status Icons in the Table View

In the Table view, every managed storage array is listed once, regardless of the number of attachments it has in the Tree view. After the storage array has been contacted by the Enterprise Management software, an icon representing its hardware status (Optimal, Needs Attention, or Fixing) is displayed. If, however, all of the network management connections from your storage management station to the storage array (as shown in the Tree view) are Unresponsive, the storage array status is represented with an Unresponsive icon.

Status Icons in the Overall Health Status Area

The Enterprise Management Window provides an overall health status area in its lower-left corner that displays a consolidated health status for all of the known storage arrays.

There are six possible overall health status conditions:

Optimal

All discovered storage arrays have an Optimal or a Fixing status.

Needs Attention

One or more discovered storage arrays has a Needs Attention status.

Unresponsive

One or more discovered storage arrays has an Unresponsive status.

Contacting Storage Array

One or more discovered storage arrays are still being contacted. This is a temporary status; when every storage array has been contacted, this icon is replaced with the true overall health status.

Needs Upgrade
One or more discovered storage arrays is no longer supported and either the firmware or software requires an upgrade.
