Recovering from Configuration File Errors

Use the following procedures to recover from errors detected in the (emwdata.bin or emwback.bin).

Recovering from a Configuration File Startup or Write Error

Follow the instructions on the dialog to recover from a startup error.

Important: When you click OK, the closes. You must fix this error before you can successfully open a management session.

Configuration File Write Error

Follow the instructions on the dialog to recover from the write error.

Important: If you click Cancel rather than correcting the problem and then clicking Retry, any configuration data generated during your management session will be temporarily reflected, but will not be saved for future management sessions.

Recovering from a Configuration File Corruption Error

To recover from a configuration file corruption error, the only action you can take initially is to click OK because the current configuration files cannot be recovered. Clicking OK replaces the configuration files and resets them to empty files. This action results in the Enterprise Management Window displaying no devices. After clicking OK, you are given an opportunity to perform an automatic discovery to add devices and rebuild your files. You have the following two choices:

Use alternate configuration files

Description

Use alternate configuration files - Use either backup copies of your configuration files, or configuration files from another .

Important: Use backup copies of your own configuration files. If these are not available, you can use another system administrator's files that have been generated from either the same or a different storage management station.

To use alternate configuration files, perform the following steps:

Click No at the Automatic Discovery dialog.

Exit the Enterprise Management Window.

Copy the backup files from the alternate directory to the directory specified in the error dialog.

Restart the Enterprise Management Window.

Verify the devices displayed, and, if necessary, select Add Storage Array to add any devices that are missing.

Rebuild the configuration files

Description

If you do not have backup copies of the configuration files, you must rebuild them from scratch using one of the two alternatives listed in the procedure column.

To rebuild the configuration files:

  • Click Yes if you want to perform an automatic discovery.
  • Click No if you want to manually add the devices back to the Enterprise Management Window by selecting Add Storage Array.
