Create Snapshot Virtual Disk Wizard: Introduction

The first dialog of the Create Snapshot Virtual Disk Wizard enables you to select either the simple or advanced path to be followed through the wizard.

The simple path (which is recommended) enables you to specify basic  parameters and accepts the common default settings. The advanced path enables you to customize advanced settings for the snapshot virtual disk, including specific capacity allocation, the  full conditions, and notification settings.

About the Simple Path

Select this option to specify basic snapshot parameters and accept the common default settings, and click Next when ready to move to the next wizard dialog.

The following are basic snapshot parameters:

Snapshot Virtual Disk Name

Specify a name that helps you associate the snapshot virtual disk to its corresponding repository and .

Snapshot Repository Virtual Disk Name

Specify a name that helps you associate the snapshot repository virtual disk its corresponding snapshot and source virtual disk.

Percent full

When the snapshot repository virtual disk reaches the specified , it logs the event, and the icon changes in the Physical/Logical View. The default threshold percentage is set to 50 percent of the source virtual disk.

Snapshot repository virtual disk full conditions

Specify the snapshot repository virtual disk's capacity as a percentage of  capacity.

The following snapshot parameters are automatically set to these common defaults:

Capacity allocation

The snapshot repository virtual disk is created using  on the same  where the source virtual disk resides.

The snapshot is given an automatic virtual disk-to-LUN mapping, if Storage Partitioning is not enabled. If this feature is enabled, the default setting is Map Later with Storage Partitioning.

Percent full

When the snapshot repository virtual disk reaches the specified , it logs the event and the icon changes in the Physical/Logical View. The default threshold percentage is set to 50 percent of the source virtual disk.

Snapshot repository virtual disk full conditions

If the snapshot repository virtual disk becomes full, the snapshot virtual disk fails.

About the Advanced Path

Select this option to set the basic snapshot parameters and four advanced snapshot parameters, and click Next when ready to move to the next wizard dialog.

You set the following advanced snapshot parameters:

Capacity allocation

You are given a choice of where to physically place the snapshot repository virtual disk. (You can use free capacity on the same disk group where the source virtual disk resides, use free capacity on another disk group, or use  and create a new disk group for the snapshot repository virtual disk.)

Note: It is better if the snapshot repository virtual disk resides within the disk group where the source virtual disk resides. This location ensures that if physical disks associated with the disk group are moved to another , all virtual disks associated with the snapshot virtual disk reside on that group, and no further physical disks must be moved.

Virtual Disk-to-LUN mapping

You are given a choice whether to give the snapshot an automatic virtual disk-to-LUN mapping, or map the snapshot virtual disk later using Storage Partitioning.

Note: If Storage Partitioning is not enabled, the default setting is Automatic. If this feature is enabled, the default setting is Map Later with Storage Partitioning.

Percent full

When the snapshot repository virtual disk reaches the specified threshold percentage, it logs the event, and the icon changes in the Physical/Logical View. The default threshold percentage is set to 50 percent of the source virtual disk.

Snapshot repository virtual disk full conditions

You are given a choice of failing writes to the source virtual disk or failing the snapshot virtual disk when the snapshot repository virtual disk becomes full.
