Create Virtual Disk Wizard: Specify Virtual Disk Capacity/Name

Use this dialog to specify the capacity and unique name for an individual . You must indicate exactly how much of the  available capacity you want to allocate to the individual virtual disk being created. Perform the following steps:

Important: When defining the capacity requirements for a new virtual disk, keep in mind any future requirements that you might have for virtual disks in this disk group. Ensure that you allow enough free capacity for creating  and their associated , or .

Use the spinner box to indicate the capacity of the new individual virtual disk and the list to indicate the specific capacity units to use (MB, GB, or TB). The maximum value, shown by default, is the maximum virtual disk capacity allowed.

Note:

  • You can type up to three decimal places for the capacity.
  • If you enter a capacity that is less than the maximum, leave enough remaining capacity to create one or more additional virtual disks that meet your application needs.

Specify the virtual disk name.

Choose a unique, meaningful name that helps you identify the virtual disk. A meaningful name describes the data that will be stored on the virtual disk.

Note:

  • A virtual disk name can consist of letters, numbers, and the special characters underscore(_) and dash(-). If you choose any other characters, an error message is displayed, and you are prompted to choose another name.
  • There is a 30-character limit.
  • If you choose a virtual disk name that duplicates that of another virtual disk, an error message is displayed, and you are prompted to choose another name.
  • Any leading and trailing spaces in the name are deleted.

Specify whether you want to use recommended settings or customize advanced virtual disk parameters.

When you specify expected I/O characteristics, the corresponding default dynamic cache read prefetch setting and ??values that are typically well suited for those I/O patterns are populated in the Dynamic cache read prefetch and Segment size areas.

If you choose Use recommended settings, the default settings are:

  • Virtual Disk I/O characteristics:
    , , or ??- File System (typical)
    ??- Multimedia
  • Preferred RAID controller module ownership: The default  is determined by the RAID controller modules in a RAID controller module pair so that virtual disk I/O loads can be appropriately balanced between them.
  • : If the Storage Partitioning feature is not enabled, the default setting is Automatic, and the virtual disk is automatically assigned a  and is accessible by any  connected to the . If Storage Partitioning is enabled, the default setting is Map Later using the Mappings View, and the virtual disk is not assigned a LUN and is not accessible by any hosts until you go to the  and assign a specific host and LUN to this virtual disk.

    If you choose Customize settings (I/O characteristics and RAID controller module ownership), the Create Virtual Disk Wizard: Customize Advanced Virtual Disk Parameters dialog is displayed. This dialog will enable you to customize the parameters for an individual virtual disk, based on application requirements.
