storage array

A storage entity managed by the storage management software. A storage array consists of a collection of physical components (such as physical disks, RAID controller modules, fans, and power supplies) and logical components (such as disk groups and virtual disks).

A storage array can span multiple physical enclosures. For example, several expansion enclosures connected to a RAID controller module enclosure constitute one storage array. A unit that contains physical disks and a RAID controller module in a single enclosure is also one storage array. A rackmount subsystem might contain more than one storage array.
