Multiple Disk Groups Refer to Foreign Physical Disk (Scenario 1)

What Caused the Problem?

A Contingent disk group considers a foreign physical disk to be a member of the disk group; however, the physical disk is a member of another disk group that is in a Contingent or Exported state. A foreign physical disk is a physical disk that has been exported from this storage array or not yet completely imported into the storage array. The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the recovery steps.

Caution: Electronic discharge can damage sensitive components. Always use proper antistatic protection when handling components. Touching components without using a proper ground may damage the equipment.

Important Notes

Recovery Steps

1 Refer to the Details area to find which physical disk slot is reporting the foreign physical disk.
2 Remove the foreign physical disk.
3 Refer to the Details area to find which physical disks are associated with the disk group that has the incorrect reference to the foreign physical disk.
4 Remove each physical disk until they are all removed
5 After the Logical view of the Array Management Window (AMW) no longer displays the disk group you removed in step 4, re-insert each physical disk until all have been re-inserted into the storage array.
6 When all of the physical disks are spun up and recognized, the Contingent disk group should re-appear in the Logical view.

Select the Contingent disk group in the Logical View, and then select the Advanced >> Maintenance >> Import Disk Group menu option.

7 Follow the instructions in the Import Disk Group dialog to properly import the disk group into the storage array.

Notes:

  • You will need to use the FORCE option since this disk group is missing a physical disk.
  • After the storage array completes the import process, the disk group transitions to a Partially Complete Disk Group state since it is missing a physical disk.
