A division of a network into an interconnected, but independent, segment, or domain, in order to improve performance and security. Because traffic is often the heaviest within a department, and Ethernet is the common network technology, the subnet limits the number of nodes (clients, servers) that have to compete for available bandwidth to a confined geographic area.
A subnet also allows multiple users to access an internet with the same subnet address.
