hot spare physical disk

A hot spare physical disk contains no data and acts as a standby in case a physical disk fails in a  , , or   . The hot spare physical disk adds another level of  to your . If a physical disk fails in the storage array, the hot spare physical disk is automatically substituted for the failed physical disk without requiring a physical swap. If the hot spare physical disk is available when a physical disk fails, the  uses redundancy data to reconstruct the data from the failed physical disk to the hot spare physical disk. When you have physically replaced the failed physical disk, a  operation occurs.

A hot spare physical disk is not dedicated to a specific  but instead is global (can be used for any failed physical disk in the storage array with the same or smaller capacity).
