Learn About Increasing the Capacity of a Virtual Disk

You can increase the capacity of  and  by using either or both of the following:

Caution: Possible Loss of Capacity. Increasing the capacity of a standard virtual disk is only supported on certain operating systems. If you increase the virtual disk capacity on a  that is unsupported, the expanded capacity will by unusable and you will not be able to restore the original virtual disk capacity. For information on supported operating systems, see Increase Virtual Disk Capacity: Additional Instructions.

Important: Increasing the capacity of a snapshot repository virtual disk does not increase the capacity of the associated . The snapshot virtual disk capacity is always based on the capacity of the  when the snapshot is created.

Important: You cannot increase the storage capacity of a virtual disk if any of the following conditions apply:

Using Free Capacity

Use this option to increase the capacity of a virtual disk using free capacity on the disk group of the standard or snapshot repository virtual disk.

The , displayed in the Logical View, is a contiguous region of unassigned capacity on a defined disk group. When increasing virtual disk capacity, some or all of the free capacity might be used to achieve the required final capacity. Note that data on the selected virtual disk will remain accessible while the process for increasing virtual disk capacity is in progress.

Example

Virtual Disk Sales requires an increase in capacity of 10 GB. The Free Capacity node indicates that Disk Group 1 (where the Sales virtual disk resides) has a free capacity of 33.765 GB.

1

Highlight Virtual Disk Sales in the Logical View, then select Virtual Disk >> Increase Capacity.

2

Specify the amount of free capacity to be used.

The Logical View updates, with the Sales virtual disk showing a status of Operation in Progress , together with its original capacity and the total capacity being added (10 GB).

The Free Capacity node displays a reduction in capacity.

Using Unconfigured Capacity

Use this option to increase the capacity of a standard or snapshot repository virtual disk when no free capacity exists on a disk group. An increase is achieved by adding , in the form of , to the disk group of the standard or snapshot repository virtual disk. You can add a maximum of two physical disks at one time to increase the capacity of a virtual disk.

Example

Virtual Disk Sales requires an increase in capacity of 10 GB. With no free capacity available on Disk Group 1, you can increase capacity by adding unconfigured capacity (physical disks) to Virtual Disk Sales.

1

Highlight Virtual Disk Sales in the Logical View, select Virtual Disk >> Increase Capacity.

2

Select the unconfigured capacity (physical disks) to be added. The Logical View updates, with the Sales virtual disk showing a status of Operation in Progress , together with its original capacity and the total capacity being added.

A new Free Capacity node is created and displayed in the Logical View.

Unconfigured capacity (physical disks) change in the Physical View to , and become associated with Disk Group 1.
