Uncertified EMM

What Caused the Problem?

The storage array currently contains an expansion enclosure in which one or both of the EMMs are uncertified. The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the Recovery Steps.

0 Caution: Electrostatic discharge can damage sensitive components. Always use proper antistatic protection when handling components. Touching components without using a proper ground may damage equipment.

Recovery Steps

1

If the uncertified status resulted because...

Then...

The expansion enclosure detected an EMM with back-level firmware

Go to step 2.

Only one of two supported EMMs was replaced with an uncertified EMM

Go to step 3.

Both supported EMMs were replaced with uncertified EMMs

Go to step 4.

2

Manually synchronize the firmware on the two EMM modules by downloading the latest Dell-released expansion enclosure firmware using the EMM firmware download option in the Storage Manager software.

When finished, go to step 8.

3

Perform the following steps to identify the uncertified EMM:

Caution: Risk of Data Loss. Make sure you correctly identify the uncertified EMM. Removing the remaining supported EMM while I/O is in progress can cause data loss.

a

From the Summary tab, click the Storage array profile link.

b

Click the Enclosures tab.

c

Either scroll down or use the Find area to find the EMM listing the following information:

EMM card status: Uncertified.

d

For the uncertified EMM, note the information given for "Location."

You will need this information for step f.

e

Locate the enclosure in the physical storage array.

f

From the back of the expansion enclosure, locate the uncertified EMM using the "Location" information you noted in step d.

When finished, go to step 4.

4

Remove the cables from each uncertified EMM.

Label each cable that is connected to the EMM to ensure that each cable is properly reconnected when the EMM is replaced.

5

Replace all uncertified components with supported components.

6

Using the labels created in step 4, reconnect the cables or transceivers. Wait 40 seconds, then go to step 7.

7

If applicable, fix any loss of redundancy problems reported in the Summary area before continuing to step 8.

8

Click the Recheck button to rerun the Recovery Guru to ensure the failure has been fixed.

No "Uncertified EMM" problems are reported

You are finished with this procedure.

An "Uncertified EMM" is still reported

  • You replaced an uncertified EMM with another uncertified EMM. After obtaining a supported EMM, repeat steps 3 through 8 to replace the uncertified EMM with the supported EMM. If you are unsure if an EMM is supported, contact your technical support representative.
  • If you are certain that the new EMM is supported, stop all I/O to the storage array, and then turn the power switches off and on again on the back of the RAID controller module enclosure.
  • If you are unable to correct the uncertified status after performing steps 3 through 8, contact your technical support representative.
