Virtual Disk Copy Feature - Out Of Compliance

What Caused the Problem?

The Virtual Disk Copy feature is out of compliance. This normally occurs if:

The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the Recovery Steps.

Important Note

Virtual Disk Copy information, such as the relationship between source and target virtual disks, timestamp, and read-only protection, is not retained when virtual disks are moved to a new storage array. Even though you moved these virtual disks, only the feature information is retained.

Recovery Steps

1

If...

Then...

You recently migrated physical disks into this storage array

The physical disks you migrated contain Virtual Disk Copy feature data; however, the feature is not enabled.

If...

Then...

You DO NOT want to enable the Virtual Disk Copy feature

Go to step 2.

You want to enable the Virtual Disk Copy feature

Go to step 3.

You disabled the Virtual Disk Copy feature but still have existing virtual disk copies on this storage array

You must either re-enable the Virtual Disk Copy feature or remove the virtual disk copies from the storage array.

If...

Then...

You want to re-enable the Virtual Disk Copy feature because the feature was unintentionally disabled

Go to step 3.

You want to keep the Virtual Disk Copy feature disabled

Remove all remaining virtual disk copies from this storage array by clicking the Manage virtual disk copies link from the Modify tab.

After removing the virtual disk copies, go to step 5.

2

Manually disable the Virtual Disk Copy feature.

a

Open a Command Prompt, and type the following command:

SMcli -n <storageArray_name>;

where storageArray_name is the name of the storage array listed in the Details area.

Note: If you receive an error from this command, change your working directory to the directory that contains the SMcli executable.

b

Execute the following command to manually disable the Virtual Disk Copy feature:

disable storageArray feature=virtualDiskCopy;

c

Go to step 5.

3

A separate Feature Key File is needed to enable the Virtual Disk Copy feature. From the Tools tab, click the View/enable premium features link and look for the Virtual Disk Copy feature.

If...

Then...

You know the location of the Feature Key File

Go to step 4.

You do NOT know how to find the location of the Feature Key File

Refer to the Premium Feature Activation card for instructions on obtaining the premium features key file. If you do not have a Premium Feature Activation card, contact your Dell sales representative.

After receiving a Feature Key File, go to step 4.

4

Once you have the Feature Key File, click the View/enable premium features link on the Tools tab, and then click the Enable a feature link. Complete the instructions in the dialogs to enable the Virtual Disk Copy feature.
