Increasing the Capacity of a Snapshot Repository Virtual Disk

Use this option to increase the storage capacity of an existing . Typically, this option is used when a warning is received that the snapshot repository virtual disk is in danger of becoming full.

An increase in storage capacity might be achieved by:

A snapshot repository virtual disks storage capacity cannot be increased if:

Important: A maximum of two physical disks might be added at one time to increase snapshot repository virtual disk capacity.

1

Highlight a snapshot repository virtual disk in the Logical View of the , and select Virtual Disk >> Increase Capacity.

Important: If no free capacity or unconfigured capacity is available, the Increase Capacity option is not available.

The Increase Repository Capacity dialog is displayed. The snapshot repository virtual disk name, the associated  name, the associated  name, current capacity, and amount of free capacity available for the selected repository are displayed. If free capacity is available, the maximum free space is shown in the Increase capacity by spinner box.

If there is no free capacity on the disk group, the free space that is shown in the Increase capacity by spinner box is 0. Physical Disks must be added to create free capacity on the disk group of the .

2

Use one of the following methods to increase capacity:

To do this

Follow these steps

Increase snapshot repository virtual disk capacity using free capacity on the disk group of the snapshot repository virtual disk

1

Accept the final capacity increase or use the Increase capacity by spinner box to adjust the capacity.

2

Click OK.

3

Type Yes and click OK to continue.

The Logical View is updated. The snapshot repository virtual disk having its capacity increased shows a status of Operation in Progress , together with its original capacity and the total capacity being added.

In addition, the  involved shows a reduction in capacity. If all of the free capacity is used to increase the virtual disks size, then the Free Capacity node involved will be removed from the Logical View.

Increase snapshot repository virtual disk capacity by adding unconfigured capacity (physical disks) to the disk group of the snapshot repository virtual disk

1

If no  are available and empty slots in the expansion enclosures are available, insert new physical disks. For more information, refer to your model-specific expansion enclosure user guide.

If no unassigned physical disks are available, and there are no empty slots available in the expansion enclosures, install another expansion enclosure and additional physical disks. For more information, refer to your model-specific RAID controller module enclosure and expansion enclosure installation guides.

2

Select Add Physical Disks.

Note: The physical disks displayed will have a capacity that is either the same size, or larger than the capacity of the physical disks already being utilized by the disk group.

3

Select a single physical disk, or two physical disks to be added.

4

Click Add.

The Add Free Capacity dialog is closed. Check the Physical Disks to add [enclosure, slot] area to ensure the correct physical disks have been added.

5

Accept the final capacity or use the Increase capacity by spinner box to adjust the capacity.

6

Click OK.

7

Type Yes to confirm the operation, and click OK.

The Logical View is updated. The snapshot repository virtual disk having its capacity increased shows a status of Operation in Progress , together with its original capacity and the total capacity being added. In addition, the Free Capacity node involved in the increase shows a reduction in capacity.

If all of the free capacity is used to increase the virtual disks size, then the Free Capacity node involved will be removed from the Logical View.

If a Free Capacity node did not exist prior to the addition of capacity and not all of the capacity that is added will be used to increase the snapshot repository virtual disks capacity, a new Free Capacity node is created and displayed in the Logical View.

Unassigned physical disks (unconfigured capacity) added to increase the snapshot repository virtual disks capacity will change in the Physical View to , and become associated to the disk group of the snapshot repository virtual disk.

Increase Capacity Progress

To view the progress of the increase capacity process, highlight the snapshot repository virtual disk and select either the Virtual Disk >> Properties pull-down menu, or Properties from the right-mouse pop-up menu.

The Snapshot Repository Virtual Disk - Properties dialog is displayed.  A progress bar at the bottom of the dialog indicates the capacity increase progress.
