Naming or Renaming Storage Arrays

Use this option to name or rename . You can also add comments to storage arrays to further identify them. If you have problems matching a storage array name to the physical storage array, use the Blink function to find the storage array on the rack.

Note: Optionally, you can select the Tools >> Execute Script option to name a storage array and use the set command. For example, set StorageArray userlabel="Engineering".

To name or rename storage arrays, perform the following steps:

From the Task Assistant, select Name/Rename Storage Arrays.

or

Select a single  or storage array in the Tree view, or select one or more storage arrays in the Table view, and do one of the following:

  • Select the Edit >> Rename menu option.
  • Select a storage array, and select Rename from the right-mouse pop-up menu.

Result: The Rename Storage Array dialog is displayed.

Select the array you want to name or rename from the Select Array list.

If you do not know the name of the storage array you want, click Blink to cause the indicator lights on the selected storage array to flash. A dialog is displayed that permits you to turn off the Blink indicator lights when you have located the storage array.

Result: The name of the storage array appears in the Storage array name field.

Type the new name of the storage array in the Storage array name field using the following guidelines:

  • Limit character names to 30 characters. All leading and trailing spaces are deleted from the name.
  • Use names that include letters, numbers, and the special characters underscore (_), dash (-), and pound sign (#). No other special characters are allowed.
  • Do not use the \ (backslash) character in a storage array name because this can cause problems on some operating systems.
  • Use a unique, meaningful name that is easy to understand and remember.
  • Avoid arbitrary names or names that would quickly lose their meaning in the future.

When you have named the storage array, the prefix "Storage Array" is automatically added to the name shown in the Logical View and in the . For example, if you renamed the storage array "Engineering," it displays as "Storage Array Engineering." You do not need to add the prefix "Storage Array" to the name you specify in this option.

If desired, you can add a comment for the storage array in the Additional comment field. When you are done, click Apply.

Result: The new storage array name appears in the Select array list.

4 Repeat this procedure to name or rename as many storage arrays as necessary. When you are finished, click OK.

Result: The Name/Rename Storage Arrays dialog closes, and the new storage array name now appears in the Tree view.
