Learn About Email and SNMP Alert Notification Settings

Select Edit >> Alert Destinations to perform the following tasks:

Configure the destination addresses for delivery of email and containing critical event details affecting .
Validate potential destination addresses by sending test notification messages and reporting the delivery status.
Configure alert notification settings to send an email alert to a specified customer support organization. The email alert contains a summary of the critical event, detailed information about the affected , and custom contact information.

What information is contained in an email or a trap message?

The name of the affected managed storage array
The IP address (only for a storage array managed through a host agent)
The host name/ID (shown as directly managed if a storage array is managed through each RAID controller module's Ethernet connection)
An event error type related to an Event Log entry
The date and time when the event occurred
A brief description of the event

Important:

To configure email , you must select Edit >> Configure Alerts to specify a mail server and sender email address.
Host destinations for SNMP traps must be running an service so that the trap information can be processed.
For tailored notifications, you can configure the alert destinations at the , host, and storage array levels. (See the following examples.)

When an alert has been set at a particular node in the Tree view, this alert indicator icon

displays next to the node.

Example 1

Storage Management Station-Level Notifications

Select the storage management station node if you want to configure email, SNMP trap destinations, or both to receive notifications for every managed storage array.

Note: If there are alert destinations also configured for individual hosts or storage arrays, the storage management software eliminates duplicate storage array notifications delivered to the same destination.

In Example 1, selecting the storage management station node and configuring alert destinations causes those destinations to receive notifications for every managed storage array.

Example 2

Host-Level Notifications

Select a host node if you want to configure email, SNMP trap destinations, or both to receive notifications for only those storage arrays that are managed through the selected host.

In Example 2, selecting Host Alpha and configuring alert destinations causes those destinations to receive notifications only for the Human Resources and Finance storage arrays.

Example 3

Managed Storage Array-Level Notifications

Select a managed storage array node if you want to configure email, trap destinations, or both to receive notifications for only the selected managed storage array.

Note: If both host-level and storage array-level settings are configured for a storage array, the storage management software eliminates duplicate storage array notifications delivered to the same destination.

In Example 3, selecting the Finance storage array and configuring alert destinations causes those destinations to receive notifications only for the Finance storage array.

Example 4

A Host-Agent Managed Storage Array Attached to Multiple Hosts

If the storage array is managed through multiple hosts, you can configure alert destinations for more than one host node. In this case, the storage management software eliminates duplicate storage array notifications delivered to the same destination, and only one host (host name and IP address) is shown in the notifications.

In Example 4, the Human Resources storage array is managed through both the Alpha and Beta hosts. Alert notifications for Human Resources lists the host name and IP address of either Alpha or Beta, instead of duplicating the notifications and listing both hosts.
