Why should I configure hot spare physical disks?

Use in a to provide an additional level of protection in case a physical disk fails. Hot spare physical disks take over for a failed physical disk in a level 1, 5, or 6 disk group. The hot spare physical disk automatically replaces a failed physical disk that is part of a disk group.

You can see whether hot spare protection is currently set. Look for the Hot spare physical disks line in the Hardware components area of the Summary tab. You also can see the number of standby hot spare physical disks and in-use hot spare physical disks.

• A standby hot spare physical disk is a physical disk that is available to take over for any failed physical disk.
• An in-use hot spare physical disk is a physical disk that is in the process of taking over for a failed physical disk. The in-use hot spare physical disk is also transferring I/O data.
