Missing Hot Spare Physical Disk

What Caused the Problem?

A hot spare physical disk has been removed from the storage array. The Recovery Guru Details area provides specific information you will need as you follow the recovery steps.

If... Then...
You removed the hot spare physical disk because you intend to replace the physical disk Insert the replacement physical disk.

When the replacement physical disk is spun up, go to step 2.

You removed the hot spare physical disk but intend to reinsert the same physical disk back into the original slot Reinsert the physical disk.  It will remain a hot spare physical disk unless you unassign it using the storage management software.

Note: If at any time you want to unassign the hot spare physical disk, you can refer to the online help or complete the steps in Unassigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk.

Go to step 3.

You intend to leave this physical disk slot empty You must unassign this physical disk in the Hot Spare Coverage dialog.

Go to Unassigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk.

If... Then...
You want the new physical disk to be a hot spare You need to assign the new physical disk as a hot spare AND you need to unassign the previous physical disk in the Hot Spare Coverage dialog (even though it is no longer in the system).
a Complete the steps in Unassigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk to unassign the previous physical disk.

When you have completed those steps, go to step b.

b Complete the steps in Assigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk to assign the new physical disk as a hot spare.
You do NOT want the new physical disk to be a hot spare You do not need to do anything to the new physical disk.  After the physical disk is spun up, it will be an unassigned physical disk.

However, you must unassign the previous physical disk in the Hot Spare Coverage dialog (even though it is no longer in the system).

Go to Unassigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk.

3 Click Recheck to rerun the Recovery Guru. The failure should no longer appear in the Summary area. If the failure appears again, contact your technical support representative.

 

Assigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk

1 From the Configure tab, select the Configure Hot Spares link, and then click the Configure Hot Spares (Manual) link.
2 Highlight the affected physical disk, and then click the Assign button.

Note:  Repeat this step if you want to assign multiple physical disks.

3 Click Close.

The physical disk will change to a Hot Spare physical disk in the Physical Disks dialog (available in the Summary tab).

4 Click Recheck to rerun the Recovery Guru. The failure should no longer appear in the Summary area. If the failure appears again, contact your technical support representative.

Unassigning a Hot Spare Physical Disk

1 From the Configure tab, select the Configure Hot Spares link, and then click the Configure Hot Spares (Manual) link.
2 Highlight the affected physical disk, and then click the Unassign button.

Note:  Repeat this step if you want to unassign multiple physical disks.

3 Click Close.

Note: If you unassigned a physical disk that is physically present in the system, it will change to an Unassigned physical disk in the Physical Disks dialog (available in the Summary tab).  Otherwise, if the physical disk had been reported as Missing from the storage array, then the removed hot spare physical disk will no longer appear in the Physical Disks dialog.

4 Click Recheck to rerun the Recovery Guru. The failure should no longer appear in the Summary area. If the failure appears again, contact your technical support representative.
