Recovering from an Unidentified Storage Array

  1. Make sure that the network connection to the is operating.
  2. Make sure that the are installed and that the power is turned on to the storage array. If a problem exists, correct it.
  3. Depending on the management method that you configured on your storage array, perform one of these actions:
  4. If you have an in-band storage array, follow this procedure. Click Refresh after each step to make sure of the results.
    1. Make sure that the is installed and running.
      If you started the host before the host was connected to the controllers in the storage array, the host-agent software will not be able to find the controllers. If so, make sure that the hardware connections are secure, and restart the host-agent software.
    2. Make sure that the network can access the by using the ping command. Use the form ping <host-name-or-IP-address>.
    3. Can the network access the host?
      • Yes – Go to step d .
      • No – Go to step f .
    4. Remove the host with the Unresponsive status from the storage management software, and add that host again.
    5. Does the host return an Optimal status?
      • Yes – You have completed this procedure.
      • No – Go to step f .
    6. Make sure that the power to the host is turned on and that the host is operational.
    7. Make sure that the host bus adapters have been installed in the host.
    8. Examine all external cables and or to make sure that you cannot see any damage and that they are securely connected.
    9. If you have recently replaced or added the controller, restart the host-agent software so that the new controller is found.
    10. Does a problem still exist?
      • Yes – Make the appropriate modifications to the host. Got to step 6.
      • No – Go to step 6.
  5. If you have an , follow this procedure. Click Refresh after each step to make sure of the results.
    1. Make sure that the network can access the controllers by using the ping command. Use the form ping <controller-IP-address>.
    2. Can the network access the controllers?
      • Yes – Go to step c .
      • No – Go to step e .
    3. Remove the storage array with the Unresponsive status from the , and add that storage array again.
      If the storage array returns to , you have completed this procedure.
    4. Does the storage array return to Optimal status?
      • Yes – You have completed this procedure.
      • No – Go to step e .
    5. Examine the Ethernet cables to make sure that you cannot see any damage and that they are securely connected.
    6. Make sure that the applicable network configuration tasks have been performed (for example, IP addresses have been assigned to each controller).
  6. Make sure that the controller firmware is compatible with the storage management software on your management station.
    If the controller firmware was upgraded, the storage management software might not have access to the storage array. A new version of storage management software might be needed to manage the storage array with the new version of the controller firmware. If this problem exists, contact your Customer and Technical Support representative.
  7. Look to see if there is too much network traffic to one or more controllers.
    This problem corrects itself because the storage management software tries to re-establish communication with the controllers in the storage array at regular times. If the storage array was unidentified and a subsequent try to connect to the storage array succeeds, the storage array becomes responsive.
  8. For an , look to see if management operations are taking place on the storage array from other storage management stations.
    The type of management operations being performed and the number of management sessions taking place together establish the number of connections made to a controller. When the maximum number of TCP/IP connections have been made, the controller stops responding. This problem corrects itself because, after some TCP/IP connections complete, the controller then becomes responsive to other connection tries.
  9. If the storage array is still unidentified, problems might exist with the controllers. Contact your Customer and Technical Support representative.
